The other day I went into a bathroom at a restaurant in Phnom Penh and found that despite the very cramped space, there were lights shining from behind the toilet, up into the bathroom... I have never experienced backlighting in such a way, but it reminded me of a Woody Allen joke where he said that he always set up backlighting in his apartment when he was going to have a girl over so that he would have the appearance of three dimensions...
